Gangtok has a way of slowing you down. One minute you are winding up a mountain road with the taxi horn echoing off the valley, and the next you are standing on a clean, car-free promenade with the smell of momos drifting past and prayer flags snapping overhead. Where you choose to sleep shapes that whole experience.
Pick the right base and the city opens up on foot. Pick the wrong one and you spend your holiday stuck in traffic on a steep ridge. This guide walks you through how to choose among the hotels in Gangtok, Sikkim, what each neighbourhood feels like, and where our own three properties sit in the picture.
We run hotels in Gangtok year-round, so a lot of what follows comes from watching thousands of guests arrive, settle in and tell us what actually mattered to their trip.

Why Gangtok Deserves More Than a One-Night Stopover
Plenty of travellers treat Gangtok as a pit stop on the way to North Sikkim or Tsomgo Lake. That is a mistake. The capital of Sikkim sits at roughly 5,400 feet, and it packs monasteries, viewpoints, cafés and one of the cleanest high streets in the country into a compact, walkable core.
Rumtek and Enchey monasteries reward an unhurried morning. The Gangtok ropeway gives you the whole town in a single sweeping ride. On a clear dawn, Mount Kanchenjunga, the third-highest peak on earth, glows pink above the rooftops before most people are awake. A good hotel that faces the right direction turns that view into your alarm clock rather than something you chase with a taxi. Give the city two or three nights and it earns them.

Choosing the Right Area to Stay in Gangtok
Gangtok is built on a steep ridge, so "close on the map" and "close on foot" are two very different things. Here is how the main areas break down.
| Neighbourhood | The Vibe & Best For |
|---|---|
| Around MG Marg | MG Marg (also written MG Road) is the heart of the city, a pedestrian-only stretch lined with shops, bakeries and benches. Staying within walking distance means you can drop your bags and step straight into the buzz without booking a cab. Sweet spot for first-time visitors, couples and families. |
| Deorali & Ropeway Side | A little below the main bazaar, the Deorali area is calmer and often kinder on the wallet, while still keeping you connected to the ropeway, the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology and the flower show. Suits travellers who want a quieter night's sleep. |
| The Higher Ridges | Some of the best Kanchenjunga panoramas come from properties set slightly above the town, where nothing blocks the northern horizon. The trade-off is a few extra minutes of driving to reach the shops. Perfect for view-seekers. |

What to Look For in Hotels in Gangtok, Sikkim
Not every listing that looks good in photos works well in real life on a Himalayan slope. A few things are worth checking before you book any of the hotels in Gangtok, Sikkim.
Essential Checklist for Gangtok
Keep these non-negotiables in mind to avoid common hill-station inconveniences.
-
Parking & Vehicle Access Ask about parking because many older buildings sit on lanes where cars cannot reach the door and you finish the last stretch on foot.
-
Genuine Mountain Views Confirm whether the view rooms genuinely face the mountains or simply the valley, since both get advertised the same way.
-
Heating & Hot Water These matter far more here than in the plains, especially between November and February. A reliable geyser is essential.
-
Food & Real Reviews Look at whether breakfast is included. Stepping out for every meal on a cold morning gets old fast. Also, read recent guest reviews!

Section 05 · Planning Your Trip
Best Time to Book & Getting There
Gangtok is a year-round destination, but the seasons feel very different from one another. March to May brings mild days, blooming rhododendrons and some of the clearest mountain views, which also makes it the busiest and priciest window. October and November offer crisp air and excellent visibility after the monsoon has washed the skies clean, and many regular visitors quietly call this the best time of all.
The monsoon months of June to September turn the hills a deep green and drop rates noticeably, though landslides can occasionally disrupt roads, so keep your itinerary flexible. December to February is cold and peaceful, ideal if you want fewer crowds and do not mind bundling up. Whatever the season, book earlier for weekends and holidays.
