Most travellers planning a trip to the Queen of the Hills get stuck at the same point. Hundreds of listings look almost identical, every one promises a "mountain view", and it is hard to tell which of them will actually make the trip easier.
This guide takes a different approach. It is not a ranked list of every property in town. It is a practical look at eight hotels in Darjeeling run by Sumi Yashshree Hotels & Resorts, and each one is matched to the kind of traveller it suits best.
All eight are in or around the Chauk Bazaar–Mall Road area. That matters more in Darjeeling than in most hill stations.

Where Should You Stay in Darjeeling?
The short answer: stay within walking distance of Mall Road and Chowrasta.
Darjeeling is built on a steep ridge, and the town centre is where everything comes together. You'll find the cafés and bakeries, the shopping streets, the Clock Tower, the evening promenade and the toy train station all close to one another. If your hotel is a short walk away, you save on local taxis. You also avoid the slow crawl of traffic on the narrow roads, and you can step out for a morning walk to catch Kanchenjunga before the clouds come in.
There is a trade-off, though. Hotels right on the busiest stretch can be noisier. Those a few hundred metres away tend to be calmer while still being walkable. Keep one other thing in mind: walking in Darjeeling usually means walking uphill. If you are travelling with elderly parents or small children, ask about the lift before you book, because many older buildings in town don't have one.

How to Choose the Right Hotel in Darjeeling
Essential Booking Checklist
Keep these non-negotiables in mind to avoid common inconveniences.
-
Ask for the view by room name In most Darjeeling hotels, only certain rooms face Kanchenjunga. If the view matters to you, book a category that has "Kanchenjunga View" in its name.
-
Match the room size to your group A 150 sq. ft. room is fine for a couple. A family of four will be much more comfortable in a family room of 350 sq. ft. or more.
-
Plan around the season Skies are usually clearest from October to December. Book early for Puja and the April–June summer rush. During monsoon, expect clouds but better offers.
-
Check your arrival point Bagdogra and NJP are 70 km away. The drive takes hours, so a hotel near the bus stand or one that arranges transfers can make arrival day easier.
